December's Birthstone = Turquoise

It's hard to believe an entire year has passed sine I started posting these wonderful old marketing Poems. I have enjoyed it and it makes me a little sad that this is the last of the series.

They've given me a post every month that was already planned, helping my continuity and has made me look a little closer at my own "marketing" (as passive as it is it's still marketing lol) I've enjoyed the themes and sharing so I'll be planning more posts over the next year.

I've discovered a little more about the ways I'm comfortable marketing and not. I've even discovered how wounded I feel when I'm criticized on how I'm marketing others, and now I know how long it takes to recover from that. Apparently I still wear my heart on my sleeve, thought I had tucked that away a long time ago.

While I sit down to work on my marketing plan for the coming year (including some of those blog posts) I do hope you will enjoy our final poem and know that I have enjoyed bringing them to you.

Decembers stone as we all know is Turquoise, but it also shares the month with Zircon and Tanzanite.

If cold December gave you birth,
The month of snow and ice and mirth,
Place on your hand a turquoise blue;
Success will bless whate'er you do.

Kind of a nice way to end the year though isn't it? A promise of success, very nice indeed.

We have once again moved the stones around throughout the ages. The original stones of the month were Ruby and Heliotrope (boy that stone gets around lol) In 1912 they were replaced with Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli. Lapis is a pretty stone and I can imagine how pretty when paired with Turquoise. But the stone was dropped in 2013 in favor of Tanzanite and Zircon. Both beautiful stones in their own right.

Novembers Birthstone = Topaz

Can you believe it's already Thanksgiving week? Time has just absolutely flown by this year!

November's birthstone is Golden Topaz and Citrine. I really like this months poem.

Who first comes to this world below
With drear November's fog and snow,

Should prize the topaz's amber hue,

Emblem of friends and lovers true.

Way back when Pearl was included with Topaz for this months birthstones. Then in 1912 it was dropped for Novembers stone. Topaz stood alone as the months stone until 2013 when Citrine was added to the list.

I don't use Golden Topaz very often but when I do it gets snapped up pretty quickly. Citrine I use a little more often, I do like the happy golden color. I know I usually do a treasury with items in chosen months color, but with Thanksgiving looming and having just curated the entire LACWE team on Etsy I think I'm going to skip. My poor laptop needs it's cache cleaned I've looked at so many things these last couple of weeks.

Octobers Birthstone: Opal/Tourmaline

The month almost got completely away without a birthstone post!

This month has two birthstones, Opal and Tourmaline. I only knew about Opal, I knew there was a pink stone that could be substituted but growing up I didn't know the name as my Mom only wore the Opal.

October's child is born for woe,
And life's vicissitudes must know,
But lay an opal on her breast,
And hope will lull those woes to rest.

As I said this month has two birthstones, Opal and Tourmaline. Prior to 1912 the second stone was not Tourmaline, it was Aquamarine the stone we now have as March birthstone. I find it pretty interesting how many stones got rearranged in 1912 and it does make me wonder a bit what exactly the reasoning was, aside from marketing that is.

I have a lone listing with some Honey Opal, but none currently in the milky white with the pink and blue flash we all know and love. I do however have some Tourmaline, it's such a versatile stone with a wonderful range of colors.

To finish this post I would like to remind you that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's what all the PINK stands for. Regardless of how you feel about the money being raised vs actual amount being donated, If you have breasts this DOES affect you (yes, Men too albeit less frequently)

One in Eight DO NOT forget those numbers more importantly, the older you get the smaller those numbers get.

My Grandma's (Mom's mom) odds were One in Four when she passed at 91, and yes she was the one.

My Grandma's (Dad's mom) were One in Eight when she passed in her early sixties, again she was the one.

My Mom, one in eight, she is a survivor.

Fight the fight and don't stop! Don't ever let politics or a political agenda tell you, your health isn't worth fighting for, it is most definitely worth the fight!

Septembers Birthstone = Sapphire

Ever have one of those weeks where you seem to be incurably busy, just getting everything done but absolutely nothing is on schedule? lol I'm having that kind of week now. I feel incredibly productive but my schedule was blown to bits!

The biggest reason, I tiled half of my laundry room ALL BY MYSELF! Half, because I didn't move my washer/dryer/freezer was actually doing laundry while I tiled lol I'll need the hubs for the rest, he's got the saw tucked away where I can't get to it by myself and I'll need to cut some tiles. The part I got done looks amazing! I am really proud of myself "pats self on back and GRINS"

It's the last week of September and I haven't managed a Birthstone post yet so I guess I'd better!

Septembers birth stone is Sapphire. Sapphires come in a rainbow of gorgeous colors but September focusses on the Blue variety.

A maiden born when September leaves
Are rustling in September's breeze,
A sapphire on her brow should bind
`Twill cure diseases of the mind.

From the 15th to 20th centuries Chysolite was Septembers birthstone. (ahem Peridot! I told you we should give Moonstone another shot...just saying....lol...) Sapphire became the go to stone in 1912 and has remained so ever since.

August = Peridot

Rough start to the month, my in-laws seem to be imploding, 'nuff said.

AUGUST! The month of my birth! Peridot and Gladiolas. As you can see though, Peridot was not always THE stone to wear......

Wear a sardonyx or for thee,
No conjugal felicity;
The August-born without this stone,
`Tis said, must live unloved and lone.

For most of the 15th through 20 centuries the stones for the month of August were as follows: Sardonyx, Carnelian, Moonstone and Topaz ......hmmm I like Moonstone! As long as we're on the subject, I like Topaz too!.......
Then in 1912 all save the Sardonyx were dropped and Peridot was added.
Finally in 2013 Peridot became the sole stone for the month of August.

I like Peridot, I do, I'm just saying maybe we could give Moonstone another chance GRINS

July's Birthstone = Ruby

Here's hoping those of you in the US enjoyed your long weekend this past week! This month's birthstone is RUBY! My middle child's birthstone, I love red it's an exciting color, her not so much lol Then again Peridot is mine and I rather like Ruby - grass is always greener isn't it? or redder as the case may be.

The glowing Ruby shall adorn,

Those who in July are born;

Then they'll be exempt and free

From love's doubts and anxiety.

Turquoise and Onyx were the recognized birthstones up until 1912 when it became the Ruby.

I did not know that! I just assumed it had always been Ruby. The kiddo might be on to something there.

I have a Ruby in Zoisite artisan cut cab, but we're waiting for my Muse to whisper it's inspiration to me for its design. Pretty little stone with it's greens and reds.

May's Birthstone = Emerald

In keeping with my monthly quick series on birthstones....The month is May and the birthstone is Emerald!

Wondering if I should tell the hubs he is a beloved wife - probably not though he is much beloved.

Who first beholds the light of day
In spring's sweet flowery month of May
And wears an emerald all her life
Shall be a loved and happy wife.

Agate was also on the list as the month's birthstone up until about 1912 when it converted to Emeralds alone.

Our treasury feature this month offers some wonderful finds in those gorgeous shades of green.

Someone remind me and I can do an Emerald City theme next year :) in the Merry Old Land of Oz....you're singing it now aren't you? It's ok I am too...... a snip snip here and a clip clip there.....ah Dorothy!

April's Birthstone = Diamond

So I have had my nose to the grindstone just playing with metals and beads with more and more ideas just constantly popping up - I LOVE it!! But that means it's April Fools Day and here I am with no scheduled post!! Ack I was doing so well too lol Birthstones to the rescue, eh didn't I tell you they'd come in handy?! Whew!

This months birthstone is Diamond - a girls best friend! So Marilyn sang anyway :)

She who from April dates her years,

Diamonds shall wear, lest bitter tears

For vain repentance flow; this stone,

Emblem of innocence, is known.

Sapphire was also on the list as the month's birthstone up until about 1912 when it converted to Diamonds alone.

March Birthstone = Aquamarine

Continuing our monthly postings of Birthstones this month we have Aquamarine. It is of a beautiful pale icy blue color quite fitting for this time of year when ice gives way to the first blush of spring. Especially fitting for this year when we seem to have had wave after wave of ice and snow storms. I for one am quite ready for this springs offerings.

This month holds two stones Heliotrope (aka Bloodstone) has been the stone of record since as early as the 15th century with Jasper as it's companion stone. However sometime around 1912 Aquamarine was substituted for Jasper and has quickly become the more recognized stone of the two.

Bloodstone too is quite fitting for this time of year, with its range of greens and slight speckles of red. The religious connotations aside (marking the upcoming Easter holiday) it is a striking stone, much like small flowers poking their heads up through the mossy ground and matt of last falls leaves.

February's Birthstone - Amethyst

I enjoyed creating the January birthstone treasury enough I thought I might make it a monthly thing. It gives me a color theme for at least one treasury a month, I get to showcase a couple of my own pieces here, and since I like using color themes that works out well for me. Bonus, it gives me a guaranteed topic for one post a month! I'd say it was cheating but if I look back over my posts I have several months missing one weeks posting and blogs LOVE consistency so it's actually making me a better blogger.

Instead of just making the treasury and calling it good, or showcasing it here with a few of my own pieces I thought it might be more interesting if I added a little something. Which helps me as I don't have jewelry for each of the birthstones - I really should remedy that! A couple years back I stumbled onto the poems for each month, first published by Tiffany's in 1870 from an unknown author. Each month has a poem corresponding to the months birthstone, if a month also has other accepted stones, I'll include that info too. At this time though unless I find it particularly interesting I'm only including the US version of the birthstone - getting on with February....

The February-born shall find
Sincerity and peace of mind,
Freedom from passion and from care,
If they an amethyst will wear.

The most recognized stone for February is Amethyst, however throughout the 15th - 20th centuries Hyacinth (Yellow Zircon) and Pearls were also accepted birthstones.

I also have a pair of Crazy Horse Agate earrings that have the coolest coloring to them, a rusty purple that somewhat resembles marble with its fine veining and mottled coloring that I paired up with crystals and amethyst. And an Egyptian Style woven copper necklace with Amethyst chips as accents.
